It turns out Eklo founder Seuil is responsible for both tracks here, which according to the label are the “fruits of a diverse collaboration” with compatriot and rising producer Vadim Svoboda. Listen carefully to both “Retroviseur” and “Ralf Beckett” and that much becomes apparent anyway, with the former notable for the jittery funk that keeps trying to escape the stripped back groove that keeps matters on a forward trajectory. Those wanting something with a bit more swing will love “Ralf Beckett” which pays subtle homage to the filter house that French producers excelled at.

Heavily aligned with the mighty Boysnoize label, his Drum Program EP typically doesn’t waste time on niceties; “Traffic” sounds like Drexciya battling Cybotron in the Tech Noir club from Terminator, there’s industrial/EBM influences on the Teutonic “Rotten”, whilst the heavily percussive title track displays a hint of ghetto tech. “Mongolito” is sparse, spaced out techno and “LSD” wraps things up with a emotive nod to early Metroplex releases. Essential techno, or is it electro, or both? Probably the latter, but definitely essential.

The title track, available here in two versions, moves from the fuzzy, acid-soaked instrumental take to the original version, which navigates a path through electro-bass frequencies, acidic pulses and ponderous, pitch-bent vocals. For the rest of the release, the duo focuses on an abstract approach. “Breaking You Down” is an esoteric soundtrack of bleeps and tones; “Your Mind Is Mine” continues the pair’s interest in frazzled drones – only this time without even the semblance of a groove to back it up.

His one-of-a-kind creation has been shown in major venues and festivals worldwide, ranging from the Smithsonian to Fuji Rock, and at galleries and festivals across Asia, Europe, Russia and North America. In 1997, Kuffner created another musical project, Zemi17. Zemi means cicada in Japanese and the 17 references the 17-year lifecycle of the periodical cicadas found in the northeast of the United States. As ever with Sofrito, there’s a sense of music education that comes with this record as the label shines the light on Gwo Ka – the folkloric rhythm of Guadeloupe – and one of its greatest voices in Esnard Boisdur. The focus here is Bosidur’s 1991 track “Soufwans” (which translates as Sufferance for those not au fait with Guadeloupian) which in the hands of Francis and Simbad is flipped into a hypnotic house production replete with deep bassline and some killer synths. The accompanying dub mix will probably appeal to the deeper house selectors too as there’s some killer drum programming on that one.

Rostami is a San Francisco-based musician whose roots extend off into theoretical dimensions far beyond conventional dancefloor fodder (his material has appeared on labels like Audiobulb and Crash Symbols). For Czarat, however, he’s honed his approach to produce an unusual dancefloor anthem. Melding influences from around the world, the song arrives at something that sounds like acid house and techno as interpreted through an internet-enabled, information rich dialog of the present moment. The names of the songs on the release hint at this culture clash. Opener “Czarat” is a fusion of the Russian word “Czar” and the ancient Persian god “Zarathustra.” Rostami refers to this as a “cultural mishmash” and ultimately the names are a nonsense words, creating something new from familiar ideas.
