The Rotterdam-based Midlight Records is one such new operation, launching last year with a must grip 12″ from newcomer that featured an excellent DJ Sotofett remix. Midlight’s second release looks to be just as enticing, pulling two cuts from the ever productive production pool of Swedish miscreants FRAK for the Saturate You 12″. The Frak sound is well established by now, heck they’ve had three decades to refine it, but that doesn’t mean “Absorb” or “Instant Transport” sound tired in any way. Much like a Legowelt or Omar S 12″, these two extended stripped down jams sound resolutely Frak in their execution and will cause optimum dancefloor damage in the correct hands.

The label’s latest release comes from Doms & Deykers which may sound like a new name, but is in fact a collaborative effort from Martyn and compatriot Steffi. Using their respective surnames, the first fruits of Doms & Deykers is the three-track Fonts For The People 12?, which seems perfectly balanced between the pair’s tastes and sounds. The title track is proper rude acid-flecked breakbeat rave primed for the dankest of basements, whilst “Penny’s Groove” retains the 90s hardcore vibes but steers proceedings towards housier terrain. Final cut “Tepper” trades in the immediacy in favour of introspection. More of this please Ms Doms and Mr Deykers!

Instead, the duo drops the tempo and, on the title track, put together an inspired break beat house affair. It eventually leads into a dreamy reverie, pushed along by a dark, pulsing bass. Is this a representation of the ‘vision quests’ that also inspired the release? Certainly, they seem possessed by a supernatural force on “Zoologico”, where layers of droning sound and shimmering synths push in over a rumbling rhythm. “Destination” meanwhile takes its cue more directly from early ’90s hedonism, with drugged out acid and ponderous vocals unravelling over heavy, dubby drums.

The time out of the spotlight has evidently seen Yoshida expand on his production palette as the downtempo stylings of his Tru Thoughts output has been traded for something a lot more upbeat on the four tracks here. The lead track is a dizzying melange of sampled African chants and tape saturated percussion blessed with some abstract textural detail, whilst “Flamingos” features some excellent marimba manipulation and gives Jamie xx a run for his money in the emotive bass music stakes. The tempo gets thrusted upwards with “Ivory” though there is still a delicate feel to the overall production, whilst closing track “Mantra” sounds like Shangaan Electro gone UK house.
