Some debuts ask for permission. Our next one doesn’t bother. ICONYC welcomes Valencian heavyweight Upercent to the fold with “Traquetea”, a two-track introduction that gets straight to work. Commanding from the first beat, “Traquetea” takes the lead with a colossal, throbbing frame, built to swallow a room whole before the crowd has had time to brace for it. Spring-traps and explosive snares lock together into something genuinely menacing as a restless alarm cuts through, triggering a cascade of complex malfunctions that scatter the rhythm before snapping it back into focus. Tension holds across the structure until Upercent steers the piece toward a delectably harrowing halt. Then the mainspring snaps, and “Traquetea” collapses into a stranger kind of flavor. On the other side, “Trot” pulls the energy somewhere else entirely. Dusky chords surge through a thumping framework with a nostalgic sway, easing the mood without losing any momentum. An irresistible horn line arrives to signal the shift in gears, brassy and unexpected, while guitar licks somersault over hazy vocal interventions and dubbed-out arrangements that blur the edges of the track into something warmer, looser, almost narcotic.
