FM (Quail Remix) 6:23 Total Playtime: 25:34 min Dub techno must be one of the most over-used tropes in contemporary electronic music, but upcoming artist Tomas Rubeck provides a fine interpretation of it on FM. “FM1” sees him layer textured chords over a stepping rhythm that lurches and morphs unpredictably. “FM2” follows in a similar vein, but here the spacious, cavernous sounds are shot through with acidic undercurrents. The remixers also impress: Exium lends some extra strength to “FM1”, imbuing it with tough rhythms and acid-fried riffs. Meanwhile, Quail’s take on “FM2” recalls Swayzak at their most delicate and understated, with gentle melodies tinkling and a reduced rhythm playing away in the background.

While much of his material is deep, soulful and loopy, with great use of classic soul, jazz and disco samples, these five tracks are more electronic in feel. In fact, they feel more European in origin. Of course, there’s still plenty of soul amongst the smoother beats – see the sumptuous deep house of “Yes I Would” and “Making It A Reality” – while “The Underground Understands” offers the best of both worlds; deep chords and darting electronics.

This first 10″ offers nothing to suggest otherwise. Featuring cuts from two fledgling artists, it ripples with distorted machine drums, industrial riffs and otherworldly melodies. Irish producer Lumigraph sets the tone, layering spooky melodies and wizened electronics over a fuzzy analogue techno groove. D.K handles the flipside, delivering a coursing chunk of clanking industrial techno – all surging sub-bass, metallic stabs, raw bleeps and thunderous 808 rhythms. If this is anything to go by, Odd Frequencies will be a label to watch.
