Konbanwa is the Berlin-based Garayalde Oses brothers’ third EP for the Swedish house imprint in as many years. The title track is particularly potent. Impressively, it chugs along in a foreboding manner – think tough, late night deep house with growling electronics – before breaking down into a piano-laden middle section that will have the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end. It’s then a piano-laden darkroom sprint to the finish. “So Special”, meanwhile, brilliantly laces vocal samples from an NYC Peech Boys’ Larry Levan-produced ’80s disco classic over a chunky, rolling, classic-sounding US house groove.

It was more recently revealed that Ekranoplan is the work of Julio Bashmore and Kowton, and listening to the four tracks that make up Wing-In-Surface-Effect, it makes sense for the pair to present them under this new name. The looped lounge of “One Metre Up”, rolling percussion of “Coil” and flotation tank dubstep of “Star Frog” all demonstrate Bashmore and Kowton clearly have a keen studio understanding. While these influences aren’t always that obvious on Into a Better Future, there are certainly glimpses of each within its pleasing mix of off-kilter deep house, bleep-heavy jams and ambient interludes. The dusty production style and moody atmosphere, prevalent throughout, does have a post-punk feel, though. Regardless, it’s an impressive set, with highlights including the early Orbital style breakbeat shuffle of “Hecstatic” and the future voodoo density of “Let’s Go”.
