Word on the grapevine is these four cuts are the work of a certain shy and retiring producer with distinctively peppery hair but these rumours have not been confirmed. Certainly the playful 90s rnb sampled wedged deep into the core DNA of the loving drift of the second track here is most reminiscent of one of LIES lesser spotted artists. Elsewhere “Track 3” sounds thrillingly like 3 different house cuts being played over one another whilst the closing track delves into more abstract territory and is reminiscent of a recovered field recording made deep into the night at Chicago institution Muzic Box.

The focus is very much on kick drums, with the one lurking around the A1 being particularly resplendent in its utter beastliness. There is additional grot and matter to be enjoyed elsewhere on the record, like the gurgling acid goodness on the A3, while the B2 sounds like frenetic electro disintegrating before your very ears. Delivered with a no-nonsense panache whilst positively reveling in the lewdness of the sound, Datasmok sounds right at home amongst the electronic deviants of The Hague.

Given their past adventures and exploits, it’s no surprise that Box is such a raucous affair. “We Got The Box” is based on a jacking, filtered groove with a woman intoning on repeat something to do with the title (although it sounds closer to “we got the pox”). However, it’s not as impressive as “Rattle”. Percussive and laced with acid, its Latino chants and insistent rhythm are sure to cause mayhem whenever they are dropped.

This second sampler 12″ features four more cuts from the Slowly Expanding collection. Perc kicks things off himself with “Hyperlink”, a typically no-nonsense sprint through techno’s more robust pastures. Sawf’s “Goves” is a killer, rave-era loop techno jacker, while Truss’s “Brockweir” comes on like the soundtrack to a bloody alien invasion. Finally, Drvg Cvltvre simmers things down – a little, at least – by dipping the tempo and lacing his contribution – the brilliantly titled “(I Want To Die At) James Franco’s House” with the unmistakably ragged sound of a Roland TB-303.

Originally released in 2009 on Diametric, it showcases the coming together of Tucker’s love for esoteric electro and clubby Detroit techno. “Origins – Intellectual Vocal Mix” is a sensuous ambient affair which features a sassy vocal sample, while the “Techno Mix” sees the velvety vocal tones unfold over a wiry rhythm. However, it’s on “Elements” that Tucker’s fusion finds its most articulate expression, with a rolling groove providing the basis for a soaring strings and atmospheric synths. The breathy ambience of “Anomoly” completes the package.

From the heads-down, rugged approach to their noisily visceral production values, Witch’s original tracks stand as prime examples of the new techno skool, differentiated from former classes by their more ascetic, blistered style. The A-side is a spring-loaded industrial kicker packing proper heat which is channelled into a more funked-up, carefully stuttering remix by Truss. B-side, they come on like AFX’s ‘Elephant Song’ with the strobing alarm stabs and crushed breakbeat techno torque of ‘S2 S2007’, which undergoes a drastic dread reduction at the hands of Shifted. Aces. We look forward to hearing what’s next from this young label.
