A return to the Mood Series always feels worthwhile when it comes from an artist who pushes the boundaries in the style, and for its 163rd edition Ajnkana delivers another absorbing four track EP that does that and more. Neuro Cellars continues to explore the far reaching imagination and technical precision to bring the genre to new levels. ‘Paralysis’ opens with a firm beat that revels a minimal design. Static charged textures crackle around the groove as chords slowly gather momentum, surging with an intensity that suggests circuitry operating at full capacity. ‘Persistance’ features layers of chords that gradually assemble into an elegant conversation between spontaneity and discipline. Random sonic flickers collide with more deliberate rhythmic parts, creating controlled disorder that create a truly hypnotising combination. The EP reaches its most powerful moment with ‘Izlize’. Created with the heaviest beat of the set, wobbling low frequencies and assertive chord stabs generate a sense of urgency. Flashes of electricity dart through the arrangement as the piece edges towards science fiction inspired techno, resulting in one of Ajnkana’s most commanding contributions to the label. Closing track ‘Vaelux’ is a unique ender. Crisp rides propel a busy minimal rhythm while playful tom work injects personality into a the upbeat and strangely charming track. Curious warbles appear and disappear unexpectedly before melodic elements arrive later in the journey, bringing warmth to the experimentation. It’s always great to see Ajnkana with another appearance on the Mood Series. The 163rd edition is a special one for multiple reasons.
